Food Smart Mom doesn’t subscribe to a particular diet or food trend. Rather, I do believe that nutrient-dense food, good fats, pasture raised meats and eggs, fresh veggies and fruit, together with an active life style are essential for nourished bodies and happy families.
My whole family eats whatever’s on the table because I believe that children inherit and learn good eating habits from watching what we eat rather than by being told what to eat. That’s why I make sure that everything I prepare is kid-friendly.
Flavors and cooking styles are greatly influenced by the Mediterranean traditions thanks to my growing up in Croatia and Italy before moving to the US. Food Smart Mom recipes are made using everyday ingredients that are readily available and proper cooking techniques that help streamline time in the kitchen.
I started cooking back in college without really knowing what I was doing. Through college and graduate school, I made every possible cooking mistake and experienced what poor eating habits do to our bodies.
It wasn’t until I started studying cooking techniques and traditional food preparation, researching food and nutrition, and trusting my grandmother – that she knew what she was talking about when she’d tell me to soak dry beans or eat more pickled veggies, etc. – that I started to see changes in my cooking and getting my health back on track.
Once I became a mom, which is by the way the dreamiest job of all, I realized that focusing on food and providing healthful meals for my family was my highest priority. That’s why I started this blog – to journal my family’s road to a nourished life.
